A JAPANESE SWORD WITH CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL SCABBARD AND HILT
19th century
The scabbard divided into four sections, each decorated with scrolling polychrome chrysanthemum sprays on a turquoise ground, the enamelled and gilt bronze hilt in the form of a double vajra, signed Hitachi no kami Minamoto no Muneshige, fitted box; together with a Warring States style bronze sword, fitted box. 61.5cm (24 1/4in) and 47cm (18 1/2in) long (4).

The symbolic significance of the vajra made it an appropriate choice for use as the hilt of a sacred sword, ken, for Buddhist rituals.
Condition
General rub and wear, loss of gilt and missing to the inlays. Signs of oxidation and verdigris.
