Description
This is the first volume of the first edition, published in Venice in 1609, of Celio (Orazio Malaspina) Malespini's collection of short stories, Ducento Novelle, this volume containing stories 1 through 96.
This copy has been recovered with a smooth leather spine with five raised bands, gold lettering and design, and with the author's name in a purple background. The marbled boards are clean and unfaded, but with three surface scrapes to the front. The leather outside corners are in fine condition, as is the spine.
Two sheets of paper, attached at the gutters of a blank front end spread, indicate previous ownership: T. S, Hughes, 1812; Henry Lockwood, undated; Edmund Carrington, 1867.
The title page is a facsimile (see photo), the only such page in the book. The pages are in very good overall condition. There are recurring spot stains, but the only substantial stains are to the upper gutters and adjacent areas of the last four spreads (see photo). The lettering is clearly legible on all pages. The binding is tight, with no loose pages. There are no stamps or other attachments. The accompanying photos are of this copy.
