Bullets excavated around the Nicodemus Heights area of Antietam, totaling 56 pieces in all and ranging in size between .25" and 1". Includes several types of three-ring bullets (28) with one among them flattened, a shotgun slug, as well as various sizes of ball bullets (20), among other miscellaneous fragments (8). Varying conditions throughout, including expected surface wear (nicks, dents, etc.). All exhibit some degree of oxidation. An expansive collection!
The Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862, between Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and Union General George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac. The area of Nicodemus Heights was used by the troops of Confederate General J. E. B. Stuart, positioning them higher in order to shoot at the Union soldiers below. The lackluster performance of the Union troops under McClellan partly urged Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, which gave the Confederate States until January 1, 1863 to free their slaves or else be in contempt of the federal government. Today, the battle remains one of the bloodiest in American history, with a combined tally of 22,717 dead, wounded, or missing.
