J. Schofield Re: Promotion to Lieutenant General & Civil War Glory
TLS, 2pp on Headquarters of the Army letterhead, dated February 23, 1895, Washington, D.C., 8" x 10". Typed letter signed on second page "J.M. Schofield" and addressed to the Committee of the Army of the Ohio with whom Schofield fought during the Civil War. Edge toning and minor soiling throughout, with flattened letter folds and creasing. Small indentation and staining from a paper clip in top left corner of both pages. Overall, good condition. Large and bold signature!
In part:
"During the most important part of my military career the old Army of the Ohio, and especially the 23rd Army Corps, and I were one.… I beg you to convey to all my old Comrades, as opportunities offer, the fact that I appreciate most sincerely their kind remembrance of the days when we served together in defense of the old Flag and the Union."
John Schofield (1831-1906) was an American soldier who held major commands during the Civil War. Notably in 1864, Schofield served as commander of the Army of the Ohio under William T. Sherman during the Atlanta Campaign. Following his participation in the war, he was appointed Secretary of War under Andrew Johnson and later served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army between 1888 and 1895.
