Julia Marlowe (1865-1950) was an English-born American stage actress who would become known for her interpretations of William Shakespeare's plays. Her career on stage began in earnest in 1879 while touring with a small-scale opera company, although her big break came in 1895 when she first debuted on Broadway where she would appear in more than seventy productions. Later in 1904, Marlowe would form a partnership with fellow actor E.H. Sothern, performing alongside each other in countless Shakespeare productions and receiving critical acclaim. The two married in 1911 and would continue to collaborate theatrically until Marlowe's retirement in 1924.
Ruth St. Denis (1879-1968) was an American pioneer of modern dance, introducing eastern ideas into the art. She was the co-founder of the American Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts and the teacher of several notable performers. Throughout the 1910s and 20s, St. Denis toured alongside her partner and later spouse Ted Shawn, performing their routines on the vaudeville stage.
Arnold Genthe (1869-1942) was a notable early twentieth-century photographer who became known for his depictions of the city of San Francisco and numerous celebrity portraits- among those he captured were poet Edna St. Vincent Millay and actress Greta Garbo.
Emil Otto Hoppé (1878-1972) was a British portrait and landscape photographer, among his subjects being notable literary figures, dancers, and members of the British royal family.
