Description
1793 Petition Seamen and Sea Captains of Newbury Port- Contains 70+ Revolutionary Period Signatures!
A petition addressed to the "Assessors of the Presbyterian Society" of Newbury Port asking that the signers may be exempt from taxes that year as they "do not expect to attend public worship with P. Society [sic] any longer". Document signed, measuring 7.75" x 11.75", Newbury Port, MA, May 28, 1793. Totaling 72 signatures in all, likely of local seaman and captains preparing to go to sea, verso declares the signers as "the names of those people who are gone off to Dickey Wigborn". Expected wear to paper including creases and folds, with areas of ink smudging, foxing, and soiling throughout. The back left corner has been ripped, not affecting the text. Good condition- an interesting piece!
