Sculptor Daniel C. French (2) ALS Regarding the Selling & Producing of Statues!
A pair of two ALS from American sculptor Daniel Chester French, most known for his marble design of Abraham Lincoln for the Lincoln Memorial. From a recently discovered collection that has not seen the light of day for over 70 years!
The lot is comprised of:
1.) 1pp autograph letter signed, dated February 20, 1881, Concord, MA. Brief correspondence to an interested party looking to purchase a sculpture, signed "Daniel C. French". French prices a piece made in plaster at $30.00 and a bust in marble at $600.00. Expected letter folds and minor creasing throughout. Some darkened soiling around the edges does not take away from the visibility of the text. Very good condition. 5.25" x 8.25".
2.) 4pp autograph letter signed, dated August 29, 1889, Concord, MA. Signed "Daniel C. French" on the horizontally written second page, and addressed to Charles H. Bell, former governor of New Hampshire, regarding a sculpture that was never produced. Flattened letter folds and creasing throughout, with light page toning and soiling. Minor smudging to the first page on the bottom right corner, else wonderful condition. Interesting content! 5" x 8".
French prices a sculpture of Revolutionary War General John Stark at $12,000, emphasizing his enthusiasm for potentially getting to create it. He goes on to ask Bell to introduce him to the current governor so as to increase the chances of its production. On the last page, French includes a list of the sculptures he has already produced in his career thus far, including that of John Harvard for the University's campus and a monument depicting Thomas Starr King in San Francisco, CA.
