DESCRIPTION: The photograph is annotated in pencil on the verso describing individuals and circumstances of the photograph. These notations are similar to the typed caption below the photograph recto. This photograph was included in the Frye Art Museum's exhibition Pioneer Women Photographers: Myra Albert Wiggins, Adelaide Hanscom Leeson, Imogen Cunningham, and Ella E. McBride. The exhibit ran from Dec. 8, 2002, through March 3, 2003. The sale includes paperwork from the exhibit along with a letter of authenticity from Padraic Partridge, Cunningham's son, stating that he had received the annotated photograph from Roi Partridge. This photograph is also included in the book Imogen! Imogen Cunningham Photographs 1920-1973. This photograph appears on page 33, see photo. The book's caption reads: It was on John Butler's raft on Lake Union with John Butler, Roi Partridge, an Indian etcher, and an Englishman. The background was a huge mural painted on canvas by John. The typed caption on this photograph reads: Photo taken in JB houseboat on Lake Washington. Background is unfinished mural by JB. Dev and Pearson were traveling with Rabanindranath Tagore, a man of presence and dignity, unequaled by any other in my experience, who honored ICP and me by coming to our studio in 1908 or 9. Pearson is said to have been killed, years later, by falling off a moving train.
