In the present work, Colquhoun uses intense saturated colour to provide a highly dramatic backdrop for the figure who emerges from a dynamic grid of colour. In the only interview given by Colquhoun, the artist summarised his pre-occupation with form and colour when he stated that, 'Each painting is a kind of discovery, a discovery of new forms, colour relation, or balance in composition' (Malcolm Yorke, The Spirit of Place: Nine Neo-Romantic Artists and their Times, Constable, London, 1988, p.243).

The canvas has not been lined and provides a strong and stable support for the work.
There are some minor spots of surface dirt and a varnish layer that appears to have discoloured slightly.
Tucked into the far left of the lower framed edge there is some rubbing and associated small flakes of loss.
Upon very close inspection of the top of the sitter's right arm, there are two vertical lines of very fine stable cracking to the paint.
Again, upon very close inspection, to the upper-left corner of the blue portion of the work there are three small spots of slightly discoloured paint which look to have been added to infill small losses.
Inspection under UV light reveals a small number of minor spots of retouching, namely a few spots in the upper-left and lower-right corners; two to the left of the figure's body; three to the aforementioned marks in the blue paint; and one more possible area of retouching to the right of the lower-half of the right edge.
