Description
Colt 1851 Navy, .36 caliber, octagonal barrel, serial number 112652, manufactured in 1861. Handle inscribed "Warren W. Packer Co. G 5th Conn. Inf. Regiment. June 21st, 1861" Bottom of handle inscribed "Captured Chancellorsville VA May 2nd 1863 by Capt. Thos. M. Riley 5th Regiment Ala. Inf."Together with sword from Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass, with chased and engraved scabbard for Warren W. Packer around a perched eagle over shield, reverse inscribed "Captured Chancellorsville VA May 2nd 1863 by Capt. Thos. M. Riley 5th Regiment Ala. Inf."Warren Wightman Packer was born on February 1, 1835 in Groton, Connecticut. On July 23, 1861 he became Captain of Company G in the 5th Connecticut Infantry Regiment. He was wounded at the Battle of Cedar Mountain and promoted to Major, later Colonel. Packer was captured at Chancellorsville, VA, but later released and returned to his unit to lead at the Battle of Gettysburg. After retirement, he served as Postmaster of Mystic, Connecticut.Thomas Mercer Riley of Alabama was born July 29, 1840 and was later Captain of Company C of the Fifth Alabama under General Robert E. Lee. Riley surrendered at Appomattox, the site of Lee's surrender to Ulysses S. Grant marking the end of the American Civil War.
