Description
Tibetan Buddhist Thangka painting, probably dating from the 19th century, was created for use in meditation practices. Following the traditional format of framing the painting with fabric, the size of the size of the mandala suggests it was made for personal devotion. A product of a temple workshop, painter monks followed models, creating the imagery on a canvas structure. Typically, the complex imagery would be organized within a square and circle. The central, seated image of Shakyamuni Buddha is surrounded by 16 versions of the Historical Buddha set within the circle recalling the wheel of life form.
