Description
These unusual saucers were produced in Austria by Royal Vienna during the second half of the 18th century, designed for double-handled cups that would probably have been used to serve coffee or hot chocolate. They are known as "trembleuse" saucers (literally "trembling") because their raised central baskets were intended to prevent spillage caused by shaky hands, particularly for those who suffered from weakness or tremors, as well as those accustomed to taking breakfast in bed. This pair features a colorful assortment of hand-painted flowers against white porcelain. The high galleries that prevent cups from slipping are pierced with geometric heart patterns. The undersides are marked with old Royal Vienna beehive marks. Each measure 5 1/2” Diameter 1 1/2” H. Excellent condition (no chips, cracks, or repairs). Hard to come by! Much easier to find trembleuse cups than saucers.
