Illustrated with numerous plates and maps, some folding. 38x24 cm (15x9½"), leather-backed marbled boards, raised spine bands, black leather spine labels titled in gilt. First Editions.
A two-part work on a monumental scale, comprising a history of the world compiled from the works of numerous authors. Contributors include George Sale, George Psalmanazar, Archibald Bower, George Shelvocke, John Campbell, John Swinton, and many others. The Universal History was one of the first Early Modern histories to attempt to, like some of its medieval predecessors, situate the history of Europe in the larger world of Africa and Asia. In doing so, it includes the beginnings of European colonial activity in its historical record.
