Description
Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000). 2 lithographs. (1) Female Dancer. Edition 2 of 20, ca. 1973 to 1974. Artist's signature in lower left corner of image. Herb Fox blind stamp on mounting paper beneath image. (2) Portrait of a Man. Edition 3 of 20, n.d. Both have artist's signature and edition number handwritten in pencil beneath image. A wonderful pair of lithographs by the famous Leonard Baskin, both done in his stark manner featuring heavy blocks of ink, energetic strokes, and powerful compositions. The first displays a woman in traditional Spanish dress turning to the right, and is set on Herb Fox mounting paper, indicating it was made in collaboration with lithographer Herb Fox in Boston between 1973 and 1974. The second piece features the head of a mature man with an impressive moustache looking to the left. Size of larger image (Portrait of a Man): 8.75" W x 12" H (22.2 cm x 30.5 cm) Size of larger matte (Portrait of a Man): 18" W x 22" H (45.7 cm x 55.9 cm)

Leonard Baskin was a 20th century "Renaissance Man" - a highly respected sculptor, printmaker, writer, and watercolorist. His prints included mythological, classical, and biblical scenes as well as portraits and floral studies. Baskin studied at Yale University from 1941 to 1943 and received his B.A. at the New School for Social Research in 1949. He also founded Gehenna Press which specialized in fine book production and taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts as well as Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts from 1953 until 1974. Baskin's artworks are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Vatican Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, the Tate Gallery in London, and other elite institutions. His noted public sculptural commissions include pieces for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial as well as the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Baskin also received many prestigious honors, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award. He was also honored with numerous retrospective exhibitions at institutions including the Smithsonian Museum, the Albertina Museum, and the Library of Congress.

Condition
Both have artist's signature and edition number handwritten in pencil beneath image. Female dancer also has artist's signature in the plate, at lower left corner of image, and Herb Fox blind stamp on mounting paper beneath image. Both are fit with a custom matte. Minor bending to corners of mattes but both lithographs are in overall excellent condition.
