5th C. Afghan Brass Amulet - Hindu God, ex Christie's

Description

South Asia, Afghanistan, ca. 5th century CE. A solid cast brass deity head depicting a Hindu god, perhaps Shiva, with a rounded face, elongated almond shaped eyes under thick brows, stretched ears with earrings, and a beaded headdress crowns his head. The verso is completely flat, suggesting this was an amulet or attached flush to another surface, and perhaps this was once part of a lingam. Size: 1.125" L x 1" W (2.9 cm x 2.5 cm); 2.75" H (7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-Jewel of the Lotus, Hawaii, USA; ex-Christie's (November 18, 1997, lot 33)
