Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. A hand-built pottery head of a highly stylized form and covered in red-brown pigment. The face bears a pair of almond-shaped eyes with delineated pupils, a prominent nose, full lips, and fleshy cheeks. The front of each tall ear is framed by the backward-curving bangs flanking the temples, and the brow is centered with a large, honeycombed emblem. Beneath the head is a slender neck tang that perhaps attached to a larger figure at one time. Size: 3.3" W x 4.7" H (8.4 cm x 11.9 cm); 5.9" H (15 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000

This is a fragment of a larger figure or composition as indicated by the lengthy neck. Softening to some finer details, with light fading to pigment, pitting in scattered areas, chips to ears, brows, and face, and encrustations within some recessed areas. Nice preservation to overall form.
