Greek, Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A stunning mold-made terracotta votive depicting the head of a young woman, perhaps a goddess, with an attractive visage comprised of delicate and strikingly naturalistic features. Crowned by a thick headband or headdress, the Classical beauty boasts generously-lidded eyes beneath a gracefully arched, a narrow nose, full cheeks, and bowed lips. A thick, coiled coiffure frames the elegant countenance with an annular earring peeking out on one side of her luscious locks. Her broad headband is additionally embellished by incised, diagonal lines. Size: 5.6" W x 7" H (14.2 cm x 17.8 cm); 9.7" H (24.6 cm) on included custom stand.

In some ways, the ancients of the Classical World were not very different from us. Just like today, youth and beauty were idealized, and flawless facial features represented purity and innocence. Scholars have posited that Etruscan portrayals like this example probably did not represent individuals. Nevertheless, this bust and others like it have incredibly lifelike details; just look at those eyes and gently parted lips! What's more, this visage would have been beautifully painted to imbue it with even more humanity.
