Description
Incredible Pair Authentic WWI Trench Art 18 Pound Shell Lamps With Provenance. Naive Art Nouveau decorated shells, papers taped to the backs detailing origin of lamps. Unfortunately one of the papers was lost long ago. The one that remains has been preserved under tape and reads: This pair of cases for 18 pounder shells which had been fired in the defence of Ypres in the winter and spring of 1916 were picked up by a Belgian peasant who [...] continued to live in the cellar of his ruined home between Ypres and Vlamertinge. He executed the decoration with rough hand tools, and included the larks and poppies which were characteristic of countryside and later referred to in John McCrae's poem In Flanders Field. He expected (as we all did) that the allies would finish the Great War in the coming "Great Push" of 1916 and hence only the first three years of the war appear in [...]. I bought these from him to enable him to obtain food. G.B. Glassor (?), Lieutenant, P.F. [...] Measuring approximately 11.5 inches H ( just the shell), 22.5 H ( total)
