Depicts a young woman with her back turned towards the viewer while a masculine figure stands to her left. Lancret was an avid follower of fellow artist Jean-Antoine Watteau, and upon their meeting, was encouraged to attend theater performances to sketch from nature by Watteau. Lancret took this advice and through this befriended his future biographer Sylvain Ballot de Sauvot and met famous dancers Mademoiselle Sallé and Mademoiselle de Camargo who later became subjects for his paintings.
