Description
HERRING, Benjamin II or Younger (British, 1830-1871): Depiction of horse and foal at the edge of a creek and bridge, Oil/Canvas, signed and dated 1869 lower right, 10.25" x 12.25", framed 12.5" x 14.75". Condition: Craquelure. From the granddaughter of Harry Bowly Hollins (September 5, 1854 – February 24, 1938) American financier, banker and railroad magnate. The family was known to have collected works by John Frederick Herring Sr. and his son Benjamin and are believed to have hung in Meadow Farm, their country estate in East Islip, Long Island, New York. According to the granddaughter and other established sources, the Hollins family at one time owned some 40 works by the artist. Some of these works, such as “The Interior of a Smithy” by Herring Sr., have been sold through Christies, Richard Green and other prominent auction houses and galleries.
