Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A free-blown glass flask exhibiting lovely golden yellow hues. The vessel bears an unusual form that tapers like a bell towards with slightly protruding shoulder, and above is a thick, funnel-form spout. The base of the vessel bears a large central kick and a rough pontil scar, and the exterior surfaces are covered in gorgeous rainbow iridescence that has developed over time.
