Item Details
Description
It has a well-formed body in the shape of early Qing Meiping. Although it is heavy, the wall is not overly thick. The clay is of the gluttonous rice type, the top porcelain clay used during mid-Kangxi. The glaze has a distinct greenish tone and very smooth, oily surface texture, reflecting the best of Kangxi glazes. The intense yet pleasing cobalt blue has slight grayish shade, common during early part of mid-Kangxi era (Kangxi reign lasted 60 years). The motifs are artistically painted within the two medallions. One depicts the happy family life of a fisherman; the other depicts that of a noble family; both are very popular motifs of mid-Kangxi, intended to portraying the peace, harmony, and prosperity of that era. A ring of word Shou (longevity) in typical Kangxi type adorns the neck. This is a high quality Kangxi ware. Around mid-Kangxi, porcelain wares were not allowed to have the reign mark on it, to avoid that the mark be shattered when a ware is broken. Thus a double circle was often drawn on the base, instead the reign mark, as on this vase. From Dr. Robert I-San Lin (#4453), 86-year old senior Chinese artwork appraiser appointed by China Commission on Artwork Authentication, whose grandfather was a major Chinese antique collector/dealer in early 1900s. (Dr. Lin’s bio, published in Journal of Authentication of Artworks, 2015, available on request). Brought to California in 1960s. H: 31.6 cm, Dia: 19.1 cm, 2082 g.
