Description
The lot features a rare, authentic circa 1890 polychrome painted drum attributed to the Plains Indian Ghost Dance movement. The piece is from the DuPont family collection, which has many authentic, rare Ghost Dance relics, and was originally collected at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota, previously Sitting Bull’s band. The drum is comprised of a bent wood frame with wetted and stretched section of Buffalo hide secured with sinew lacing and covered in mineral pigment paint in typical Ghost Dance fashion. The front has the old yellow, black and blue painted symbols of large waterbird in flight, sun, moon and stars along with smaller waterbirds in flight which all are documented Ghost Dance symbols. The original holding strap is still attached to the back and the drum is in well preserved condition with minor and expected wear from honest age and use. Truly an important relic from the Western Plains history. Provenance: From the ex-collection of the DuPont family of St. Louis, MO. Measures 15 inches in diameter by 4 inches tall.
