Acee Blue Eagle (Oklahoma, 1909-1959), hunt scene, acrylic on board, sight: 12 x 20", frame: 23 x 30"
Provenance: A Kerrville, Texas collection
A Creek-Pawnee artist and teacher, Acee Blue Eagle was born Alex McIntosh near Anadarko, Oklahoma. He developed his artistic skills under the guidance of Dr. Oscar B. Jacobson, a mentor to a number of American Indian painters. He received a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1932, and lectured on Indian art at Oxford University in England in 1935, touring Europe afterward. When he returned home, Blue Eagle accepted a teaching position at Bacone College, where he helped to establish the art department and served as its head through 1938. Blue Eagle served three years in the military during World War II and then joined the art staff of Oklahoma State University Technological School in Okmulgee, where he was in residence until his death on June 18, 1959.
