Carl Rice Embrey depicts the lonely prairiescapes around his hometown of Hamilton, Texas in stunning realistic detail. Embrey received his M.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, and then accepted a teaching job at the San Antonio Art Institute, where he remained on the faculty until the school€â„¢s closure in 1993. He moved from works of abstract expressionism earlier in his career to the detailed representational style he would later become most acclaimed for, typically spending 800 to 2000 hours on each painting. In 1997 the McNay Art Museum organized a one-man retrospective of Embrey€â„¢s work, recognizing him as one of the state's five most respected artists.
