Jose Vives-Atsara was a Spanish-American painter known for his detailed and realistic depictions of villages in his native Spain, Texas landscapes and missions, and the San Antonio River. For his vibrant oil paintings he used only nine colors, mixed in a variety of ways. He then used a palette knife to apply thick layers of paint to create a dynamic, life-like and luminous texture on the canvas. He studied at Colegio de San Ramon in Spain, where artists such as Diego Velazquez and Gustave Courbet became key influences on his style. Vives-Atsara developed a close relationship with the Incarnate Word College, becoming both a professor of art and an Artist in Residence. His work can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in Spain, the San Antonio Convention Center and the Fort Worth Art Museum.
