This seldom seen vintage 1974 Bulova Caravelle day-date, which came from the estate of its original owner, has a pristine matte black "T SWISS MADE T" signed dial and the original lume, which remains fully intact and no longer glows after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a perfectly matching warm buttermilk hue. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with no visible signs of oxidation. The outer edge of the case back is stamped "CARAVELLE SHOCK RESISTANT STAINLESS STEEL AUTOMATIC ANTI MAGNETIC WATER RESISTANT" with "N4" stamped along the inner edge. The inside of the case back is stamped "M.R.P." followed by "CARAVELLE WATCH DIVISION,""BULOVA WATCH CO,""SWISS" and "7326." The crystal needs to be replaced. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss "CARAVELLE WATCH" stamped AS 2086 automatic movement with quickset day and date functions is clean, runs strong albeit a bit fast and both the day and date wheels roll over as they should. The quickset day function works by pulling the crown out to the first position and then turning it counterclockwise. The quickset date function works in precisely the same fashion with the exception of turning the crown clockwise until the desired date has been reached. After winding the original "C" stamped non-screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the movement ran about two minutes fast by the end of its approximate 41 hour power reserve period. Although the crown turns a bit stiffly when setting the time it winds with an appropriate amount of tension. Given that the movement runs a bit fast and considering its unknown service history (there is one undecipherable watchmaker service marking on the inside of the case back) a complete overhaul is likely long overdue and recommended. This watch measures approximately 40 mm (1.6 inch) excluding the crown, approximately 41.5 mm (1.6 inch) including the crown and approximately 20 mm (0.8 inch) between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the mid-case, is approximately 8.5 mm (0.3 inch). Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 11.5 mm (0.5 inch). This watch comes on a "PROSPECT," "100% STAINLESS STEEL" and "HONG KONG" stamped bracelet that shows moderate stretch.
