This painting was created in the late 1980's and depicts Mr. Bill White a 6th generation Texas Rancher on the White Ranch which dates back to 1821. This painting was displayed prominently in the Delmonico's Steakhouse in the Westin Galleria in Houston, TX for many years.
Red was reared by a family composed of a mix of artists and educators in Southeast Texas. From his early years, Red was interested in the stories of the many ranches in the area which number among the oldest in the Lone Star State, some dating from the Spanish Colonial Days.
Drawing and painting have been an interest of Red?s since childhood and his early interests naturally became an ongoing subject of his art. Listening to exploits of earlier generations of his family served to fire his undying admiration for cowboys and their way of life. After college, Red went into a successful business career, but the absence of the fulfillment that he experienced in the creation of art left a deep void inside.
He returned to graduate studies at Lamar University and formally studied under the watchful eye of Jerry Newman. As his art developed into the driving force of his life, he chose to make it his full time occupation. Since that time, Red has traveled the West, meeting and working with the men he has so admired since his childhood.
His experience as a cowboy has taken place from the White Ranch of Chambers County, established in the early 1800?s, to the South Texas area, and to the famed LX Ranch outside of Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle. Red has also worked the Western part of the Panhandle around Adrian, Texas and in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Colorado. As Red joins other cowhands in roundups, brandings, shipments and other ranching activities he envisions the dynamic images which will be immortalized as he transfers them from his memory with oil paint on flat surfaces. What started out as working relationships with these hard working Westerners has turned into some of the best friendships a man would ever be lucky enough to have.
