Description
An English George III sterling silver large bread basket hallmarked London 1781 by John Wakelin & William Taylor. Circular, the openwork sides formed as reeded lattice, with rope band upper rim and rope twist swing handle, the base chased with band of stiff acanthus leaves, center engraved bottom center with contemporaneous crest and coronet, the arms are possibly those of Cowper impaled with Chambers. 11" H x 10.5" W. Marked on the bottom along with the scratch weight 38 = 15. 37.63 ozt. Note: The offered lot is related to several other baskets created in the same period by John Wakelin & William Taylor. One with the arms of Somerset under a marquess's coronet for Henry Charles (1766-1854), Marquess of Worcester, who succeeded as Duke of Beaufort in 1803 was Sold Sotheby's, New York, 26 April 2008, sale NO8345, Lot 283; one with the crest and motto of Wright was sold Christie's New York, 22 October, 2013, Sale 2737, Lot 82; one with the arms of Clinton with Pelham in pretence for Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne (1720-1794) sold Christies, London 26 November 2013, a fourth is currently in the English trade. Provenance: Removed from an Upper East Side townhouse.
