Rare, original circa 1698 black and white English engraving of the first lighthouse in the English Channel - A PROSPECT OF EDDY-STONE LIGHT-HOUSE NEAR PLYMOUTH BEING 80 FT HIGH?Erected and Contriv'd by Henry Winstanley...Drawn by Jaaziell Johnston painter, L. Stuart engraver. 17.5 x 12 in, framed 25.5 x 20. VG condition, light foxing. NOTE: In 1696 Winstanley (artist, engineer, & merchant) was ridiculed for attempting to build this lighthouse (on a small rock) to save mariners due to it's location 14 miles out to sea. He did the near-impossible within 2 years but was killed in 1703 trying to save the structure during a massive storm.
