Description
Monumental impressionist oil painting on canvas depicting a covered bridge in winter with man exiting on horse drawn sleigh, signed in lower right George Wharton Edwards ANA. Back is titled -- Cornwall Covered Bridge, March 1935, Connecticut. Size: 35.5 x 45.25 inches, mounted in period Arts & Crafts carved wood frame, making it 45.5 x 55.5 inches. This bucolic scene, capturing bygone days in New England, is probably the Magnum Opus for this artist and was most likely commissioned for the cover of a magazine. (George Wharton Edwards 1859-1950 was an Associate Member of the National Academy and an illustrator, active in CA & CT). The West Cornwall covered bridge was built in the 1700's and George Washington reputedly traveled through the bridge when he visited the area.
