Provenance
Private Collection, Calgary.

This is an early model pole by Haida artist Leon Ridley that depicts a Wasgo (sea bear) with what appears to be a bear cub between its ears over a bear holding a whale. The imagery of the pole is likely referring to the story of the Lazy Son in Law, which details how the Wasgo came to be. Ridley is a Massett-based carver who apprenticed early in his career with master carvers Reg Davidson and Jim Hart.
