In a historical context, the Republican candidate Thomas Dewey consistently led in the polls in the weeks before the 1948 presidential election. As Wall Street's preferred candidate, stocks rallied. But the incumbent, President Harry Truman, ultimately won the election and Democrats took control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The race was so tight that the Chicago Daily Tribune, newspaper mistakenly published that "Dewey Defeats Truman". The S&P 500 fell by more than 10% over the next two weeks. Long before Charles Schultz made Snoopy famous, there was another comic strip dog that captured the nation's imagination. That was the Boston Terrier, Snubs. It was appropriate the artist Paul R. Carmack would decide to feature a Boston Terrier since the strip appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, published in Boston. The paper had only been in existence a few years when they hired Carmack. The strip became so popular that Carmack released a series of books compiling the strips. This was a charming family strip with a boy (who Snubs refers to as "the boss") and his dog which kept folks laughing.
