Description
This is a Ripley Illinois dog, not an Anna dog but still a nice dog. This information was kindly provided by the Anna Pottery FB group and we will quote more or less directly. Several key factors as to make this not Anna Pottery. "Most" of the Anna dogs out there that are marked as well as the "attributed" unmarked Anna dogs face the opposite direction from the Ripley dogs. A Ripley dog's head is to the right while most Anna dog's heads are to the left when looking at the front or face. The size of an Anna dog is around 12", but can vary depending on if they sit on a base or not. Some of the Anna dogs sit on a cross hatch inscribed base while others sit on a mushroom base. Ripley dogs are smaller, around 8", and most that I have seen do not sit on a base. Lastly, a Ripley dog tail curves around to the right leg of it's body, not extending past it's right rear foot. The style of Anna dogs are referred to as "curly tail spaniels" in Adele Kenny's book Staffordshire Spaniels, A Collectors Guide to History, Styles and Values. Ripley dogs and Anna dogs are two distinctly different dogs. Both styles of dogs were molded from original Staffordshire Spaniel dogs and used as doorstops rather than mantle pieces. Also these dogs were made by various potteries in Ripley as late as just post WWI. This is a great example of Ripley magnesium glazed spaniel dog ca. 1870. 8.75"H x 7.5'W. Because this figural is formed by a mold, there appears to be on the side of the dog a crack forming. That is where the mold was put together and there are some surface lines and glaze loss, but overall minor.
Condition
