Description
Very rare snake jug circa 1860. Mistaken attribution and thank you for the follow-up from the various parties re: this oversight. The snake jug is more than likely Missouri as suggested. The original information that was shared with us is from EarlyAmericanCeramics.com (the blog of redware expert Justin Thomas) and the example being a 19th Century Stoneware Temperance Jug in the Collection of the Missouri Historical Society. Such incredible detail that there are little areas of what might appear glaze loss, but are done purposely to create stripes on the snake. 8" by 5.5". Remarkable condition with minor glaze losses; tongue of snake long broken off and the tip of the tale also has small chip at the base attachment of the snake.
Condition
all pottery is in good estate condition, the picture will show any flaws and if we see something that needs to be noted we will do so in the listing.
