AN UNUSUAL HEXAGONAL PICNIC SET
Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era
Comprising three hinged lozenge-shaped components that form a hexagon when closed and containing: a two-tier hexagonal box and cover; two two-tier and one single-tier lozenge-shaped boxes and covers; and five lozenge-shaped trays; all decorated with stylized floral and hō-ō motifs; the wood substrate covered in glossy black lacquer and decorated principally in gold hirame and shell inlay; the hardware including the ingeniously formed tripartite handle of silvered metal; with a wood storage box
