Description
A rare 18th century Chinese Atlas titled ' Nouvel Atlas de la Chine, de la Tartarie Chinoise et du Thibet' (translated: New Maps of China, Inner Mongolia & Tibet) is considered to be the most comprehensive 18th century European atlas of China and the first to include Tibet. This edition was published in the Hague by Henri Scheurleer in 1737, with maps executed by the royal cartographer Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon D'Anville (1697-1782), under the reign of Louis XV. Originally containing 42 engraved maps including 3 folding & 10 double page, there now remains a total of 40 maps, including 2 folding & 7 double page. Condition notes: calfskin covers, hinges & spine completely debrided, distressed paper-board panels exposed, paste down remains, page edges distressed, tears, foxing, repairs.
