Description
American Civil War pewter ID disc belonging to Private Charles W. Ayer, of Company F, 4th New Hampshire Infantry. Obverse of disc presents bust portrait of General McClellan facing right with text "MAJ. GENERAL MC CLELLAN". Reverse of disc presents border cast text "THE WAR OF 1861, '62 & '63" with center being stamped lettering "C W AYER CO F 4 NHV VA FT MONROE". Disc measures 1.3" in diameter. Surface of badge exhibits wear and some verdigris. Charles W. Ayer (1841-1905) enlisted and was mustered into Company F, of the 4th New Hampshire Infantry regiment on September 8, 1861. He was discharged at Fortress Monroe on September 21, 1864. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Pembroke, New Hampshire. Provenance: Gary Wolfer collection.
