Collection of 4 cart-de-visite photographs including; 1.) Full length standing drummer wearing 9-button frock, with white sling and eagle drum, holding sticks with kepi on table. CDV backmarked Israel & Co., Baltimore St., Baltimore. Image identified on reverse in ink "Drummer Markley Lewis, Co. I, 138th PV". Samuel Markley Lewis (1848-1924) enlisted and was mustered in on August 26, 1862 as a musician in Company I, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry and was mustered out on June 23, 1865. He is buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. 2.) Full length standing officer wearing officer frock coat with captain's rank straps and holding unsheathed foot officer's sword. CDV backmarked Israel & Co., Baltimore St., Baltimore. Image identified on reverse in ink as "John W. Feight, Co. F. 138th PV". John W. Feight (1837-1896) enlisted and was commissioned on August 30, 1862 as a 1st lieutenant of Company F, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry and was promoted to captain on January 24, 1863. Feight was wounded at the 3rd battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864. He was promoted to regimental chaplain on February 21, 1865 and was mustered out on May 23, 1865, at Washington DC.. After the war he was a minister in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. 3.) Full length standing enlisted soldier wearing 9-button coat with kepi on table with "138 PV" and "I" insignia. CDV backmarked J.H. Young, 231 Balto. St., Baltimore, MD. Image identified on reverse in ink "Pvt. Samuel Ireton". Samuel R. Ireton enlisted and was mustered in on August 26, 1862 as a private in Company I, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was captured and made a POW at Andersonville Prison Camp, Georgia and died there October 10, 1864. He is buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery, Georgia in plot number 10616. 4.) Bust view of officer wearing uniform and rank straps of a brigadier general. CDV backmarked Addis Gallery, 308 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington D.C. and presents a 2-cent tax stamp. Image is identified (incorrectly) on the reverse in ink "Col. Lewis A. May, 138th PA Vol.". As Colonel May never attained the rank of general it is believed that this image is actually Matthew R. McClennan (1834-1872) who enlisted on August 26, 1862 and served as Colonel in command of the 138th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. For his gallantry and leadership he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on April 2, 1865. He mustered out on June 23, 1865. McClennan is buried in Montgomery Cemetery, West Norriton, Pennsylvania. CDV's accompanied by 3-ring binder of research related to CDV subject and book titled "Pocket Diary 1864 of Pvt. George Imler" published by Richard Gray (1963). Provenance: Gary Wolfer collection.
