TWO PAINTINGS DEPICTING HMS ALGERINE

Two paintings, oil on canvas, each relined and framed, both depicting the HMS Algerine, the first with the gunboat firing on seven Chinese ships at sea; the second showing the same ship with two other Algerine-class gunboats firing on a Chinese coastal village, the reverse of each with an inked inscription on the stretcher noting the paintings were done from sketches created by James Walker, Boatswain, dated June 3, 1868 and October 5, 1867, respectively.

Seven Algerine class gunboats were launched in 1857 as part of Great Britian's Pacific Naval fleet. One of them, the HMS Algerine, is depicted here. The ship's naval career would last fifteen years, all in coastal Chinese waters. In 1875 she was decommissioned and sold into commercial service, retaining the Algerine name.
