Paul Tibbets Signed Photo of "Little Boy" Atomic Fission Bomb
A black and white photograph measuring 11" x 8.5", Los Alamos, dated May 2, 1985. A photograph of the "Little Boy" atomic fission bomb which dropped over Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, signed and inscribed at the lower left corner, "For Samuel S. Kolade with best regards Paul W. Tibbets 5/2/85." Stamped on verso by the Los Alamos National Laboratory and numbered "SWG-59 4937". Very fine, with a bold signature.
This bombing, along with a similar attack on Nagasaki, forced the surrender of Japan on September 2nd, 1945. Although the bomb weighed only 4.85 tons, it yielded an explosion equivalent to nearly 15,000 tons of dynamite. The bomb destroyed 5 square miles of the city of Hiroshima and caused an estimated 140,000 deaths by the end of 1945. Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. (1915-2007) enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1937 and qualified as a pilot the following year. He helped with the development of the B-29 Superfortress, and in 1945, he piloted the "Enola Gay" (named after his mother), when it dropped the atomic bomb “Little Boy”.
