Both with marbled endpapers. Volume I has two bookplates. Volume II has three bookplates with seven pages of newspaper clippings. Brown leather-bound boards with gilt lettering at the spine. Light edge toning with foxing throughout internal pages. expected wear, scratching, and soiling to the covers. Rubbed and bumped corners and spine. Slightly cracked binding. Condition commensurate with age.

David Garrick (1717-1779) was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager, and producer who influenced nearly all aspects of European theatrical practice throughout the 18th century. He studied under Dr. Samuel Johnson and the two later became close. He gained widespread recognition with his appearance in the title role of Shakespeare's "Richard III", which earned him a position at the Theater Royal, Drury Lane in the West End. He would go on to buy a share of the theatre and manage it for the next 29 years. Under his management, the Drury Lane would become one of the leading theatres in Europe. Upon his death, Garrick was honored with a funeral at Westminster Abbey and buried in Poet's Corner.
