After retiring from acting in 1965, Shirley Temple Black (1928-2014) began a new chapter in politics. She was first appointed delegate to the 24th United Nations General Assembly in 1969 by Richard Nixon, and later served as U.S. Ambassador to Ghana under Gerald Ford from 1974-1976. While serving as Ambassador to Czechoslovakia between 1989-1992, Black would bear witness to their fight against communism and subsequent transition to a republic, being present during the Velvet Revolution which lasted for a week in November 1989.
