Description

Pair of Late 19th Century Stereographs Depicting Native Americans

A group of (2) printed photograph cards, stereograph format, all measuring 3.5" x 7", n.p., n.d. Published by Popular Series, a common stereograph manufacturer in America between the 1860s and 1890s. Stereoscopic images, or a stereogram, refer to a pair of images that, when viewed with a stereoscope, present a 3D depth to the image. Minor foxing, toning, and bumped corners to all. Does not affect the image quality. Overall very good condition. The lot includes:

1.) "Nez Perces Indians of Idaho". A scene depicting three indigenous persons from the Nez Perce tribe of Idaho. In 1877, members of the Nez Perce tribe that opposed relocation by European Americans were pursued across four states in a series of armed conflicts until their unfortunate surrender four months later. Today, the Nez Perce is a federally recognized tribe in north-central Idaho with more than 3,500 enrolled citizens.

2.) "Arizona Indians". Depicts a group of three indigenous children from an unknown tribe in Arizona. Today, the state of Arizona has seventeen federally recognized tribes, as well as five whose territory spans multiple states.
