Anton Otto Fischer illustrated regularly for The Saturday Evening Post and for Kenneth Roberts's serial novels. Fischer painted this work as an illustration for Roberts's book of the same title from his series Chronicles of Arundel, which recounts the story of US sea captain Richard Nason during the War of 1812.

Inscribed on the reverse: 'An Arundel privateer captures a British merchant man. Painted for The Lively Lady/Loaned to Kennebunkport Service Club, 1943/Kenneth Roberts' and 'Boyle + Nason' (on the stretcher).
