Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 800 CE. A copper ceremonial rattle and tumi with a flattened crescent blade atop and large hollow handle formed by folding the copper sheet back on itself create a pocket for clapper balls. Both sides of the rattle surface are hammered with repousse stippling motifs and piercings for suspension cords or ornamental tassels. The beautiful and thick turquoise patina is impressed with textured patterns from a woven cloth across both sides, suggesting that this tool was placed atop or wrapped in a textile fabric as a funerary offering to accompany an elite deceased to the afterlife. Size: 11" L x 4.75" W (27.9 cm x 12.1 cm)

Condition
Chips to blade edge and losses to patina. Rattle balls are absent. Tearing creasing, and losses to handle panel. Textile impressions and tiny remains of fibers in the rich patina.
