William F. “Bull” Halsey (1882-1959) Fleet Admiral. Halsey was made commander of the South Pacific Area,and led the Allied forces over the course of the Battle for Guadalcanal (1942–1943) and the fighting up the Solomon chain (1942–1945).[2] In 1943 he was made commander of the Third Fleet, the post he held through the rest of the war. 8 ½” x 11” typed document signed, South Pacific Force, the document is a citation accompanying the awarding of a Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Wesley Burton Haggard. Haggard was recognized for distinguished service “…on the northern coast of Guadalcanal Island on August 10, 1942…fearlessly faced the accurate rifle fire of numerous enemy snipers to treat the wounds of incapacitated marines….”
