Black Sheep Squadron. One of the legendary fighting units to emerge from the Solomon Islands Campaign, and more broadly from World War II in the Pacific, was Marine Fighter Squadron 214, popularly known as the Black Sheep Squadron. The paper-back book, Once They Were Eagles, by Frank E. Walton, The University Press of Kentucky, 1986. Inscribed and signed inside the front cover by Glenn L. Bowers Signed by thirteen on the title page: Henry Bourgeois “Boo,” Bob McClug “Lt Col Blacksheep 7 Zeros,” Bruce J. Matheson “Colonel – USMC – Retired,” Ed Olander, Ed Harper, Rusty March, Jim Hill “Lt. Col.,” Sanders S. Sims “…USMC Ret.,” John F. Bolt “Lt. Col. USMC-,” H. A. McCartney “Col USMC – Retired,” Herb Holden, Fred S. Losch, W. D. “Junior” Heier “Lt Col – USMC.” Ned Cormanhas signed on page 128, on his photo and Glenn Bowers signs a second time on page 162. The book is unblemished.
