Dark green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial jacket with artwork designed by Cleon. First Edition, early printing.
Very early printing with Scribner's seal on the copyright page but with broken type on pp. 248, though not on pp. 36, which later printings would also have. There were three identical printings for a combined total of just over 16,000 copies, the only distinguishing characteristic being the battered typed, not present on early copies, heavier on later copies. As this copy is only partly battered, it can be assumed that while it is not from the very beginning of the print run, nor is it from the very end. Early jacket with the lower half of the woman's lips slightly battered. According to Bruccoli, later on jackets show a “progressive batter” with the lower lip in a downward angle. Bruccoli A13.I.a.
