1901 Lucky Penny New York Pan-American Exposition Indian Cent 1c Grades NG. At the beginning of the 20th century merchants began putting coins, mainly cents, in specially made aluminum holders that contained advertising for their business. Encased coins first started appearing in 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition held in Buffalo, New York. So out of every encase coin and lucky encase pennies ever made, these were the first!! The Pan-American Exposition (Pan-Am), which took place in Buffalo, NY from May 1 to November 1, 1901, was a World's Fair designed to recognize the independence and growth of the nations of the Western Hemisphere and to celebrate the technological advances of the 19th century.
